I also, have a son twenty-two and his name is Robert Ambers II and he plays football for Mississippi State University and they won the Liberty Bowl this year! You need to start with the original digital photo and make that square on your computer.
Try www.picnik.com if you don't have photo editing software on your computer.
The tool to use is the "crop" tool.
Once you've got it square and looking like you want at a large size, then you can upload that to this website.
One more suggestion: consider using a "head shot" instead of a full-body "shot" -- that is how your image is intended to be used on the site.
